Travelling to Ireland by Air
Shannon airport is the closest airport and is a 45 minute drive. Both Aer Lingus and Ryanair fly into Shannon airport. Alternatively, Dublin airport will offer more choice of routes and is a 3.5 hour drive.
Travelling to Ireland by Ferry
Most anglers travelling from the UK to Ireland take their own car on ferries. There are 14 ferries operating on the Irish Sea with a mixture of fast craft and the more traditional style super-ferries. The sailing time can be less than two hours from Holyhead and Stranraer while the Norfolk Line sailing from Liverpool Birkenhead docks to Dublin has become a popular overnight crossing leaving at 10pm and arriving at 6am.

From Dublin
The best approach from Dublin is to take the N7 heading towards Limerick, at Roscrea follow signs to Birr. As you get to Birr take the turning for Portumna. At Portumna continue straight through the main street and follow the signs for Mountshannon/Scariff, which will keep you on the main road to Whitegate village.
From Galway
From Galway, take the N6 to Loughrea, at Loughrea turn right onto the N65 to Portumna. Turn right onto the main road at Portumna, following the signs for Mountshannon/Scariff, which will keep you on the main road to Whitegate.
From Cork
Travel to Limerick on the N20 from Cork. At Limerick take the N7 (Dublin) as far a Birdhill. Take first left after Birdhill for Killaloe, then carry on past Scariff and through Mountshannon. Whitegate is just 4.5 Km past Mountshannon.
After you arrive in Whitegate village from Mountshannon:
In the middle of the village take a right at the junction. The Half Barrel Pub is at the top of this street. The road veers to the right at the top of this street. Take this road to the right. Continue for approx 2km to the Ashtree crossroads. (There is a small sign here and also an old boat at the side of the road). At this crossroads take the right turn. Continue 1km to a small crossroads with a white house at this crossroads. Take the left turn. Continue down this road and Lough Derg Holiday Houses are the second right.
After you arrive in Whitegate village from Portumna
Take a left turn when you reach Whitegate village. The Half Barrel Pub is at the top of the street. The road veers to the right at the top of this street. Take this road to the right. Continue for approx 2km to the Ashtree crossroads. (There is a small sign here and also an old boat at the side of the road). At this crossroads take a right turn. Continue approx 1km to a small crossroads with a white house at this crossroads. Take the left turn. Continue down this road and Lough Derg Holiday Houses are the second right turn.
